Siemens Healthineers receives FDA Clearance for Helium-Free 1.5T MAGNETOM Flow MRI

Siemens Healthineers has received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for its 70cm bore Magnetom Flow magnetic resonance imaging system, a 1.5 tesla platform designed to operate with minimal liquid helium.

The Magnetom Flow uses a closed helium circuit and does not require a quench pipe, helping to reduce helium dependence and simplify installation.

The system requires only 0.7 litres of liquid helium for cooling, compared with more than 1,000 litres typically used by conventional MRI scanners, enabled by DryCool technology.

Designed as an upgradable platform, the Magnetom Flow supports the full range of clinical MRI applications. Artificial intelligence–based image reconstruction helps shorten scan times while maintaining image quality.

Automated workflows, including new cardiac scanning processes, support more consistent exam setup and improved efficiency. Tools are also available to assist with scanning patients who have implants such as pacemakers.

The system can lower yearly energy usage by as much as 56% compared to previous Siemens Healthineers MRI models. An Eco Power Mode automatically switches off energy-intensive components when not in use.

Future hardware upgrades are supported to extend system lifetime and reduce environmental impact.

The platform is compatible with a wide range of high-density coils, including flexible BioMatrix coils designed to adapt to different patient anatomies and improve workflow efficiency.
