SMH Breaks Ground on North Port’s First Full-Service Hospital with $507M Investment Project

Introduction

Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMH) has started work on North Port’s first acute-care hospital, marking a major step in expanding healthcare services in south Sarasota County. The new development forms part of SMH’s long-term strategy to improve local access to emergency and specialist care.

Features

The project involves a $507 million hospital campus being built on a 32-acre site on North Sumter Boulevard. The new facility, to be known as Sarasota Memorial Hospital – North Port, will be the third hospital developed by SMH in its 100-year history.

The main hospital will be a nine-storey building supported by an adjacent three-storey medical office structure. The site has been designed for growth, initially opening with 100 beds.

Three upper floors will remain unfinished, allowing quick expansion to 208 beds when needed, and long-term plans allow for capacity of more than 400 beds.

The hospital will deliver a broad range of services including emergency care, surgical and medical treatment, diagnostics, outpatient care and physician practices.

The ground floor will include the emergency department, imaging, support services and catering facilities.

Surgical and procedural areas will be located on the second floor, while patient units with private rooms will occupy floors four to six.

Mechanical services will be positioned on the third floor, and the top floors will be reserved for future clinical development.

Construction of the hospital is scheduled to open in 2028, providing modern healthcare facilities for one of the fastest-growing communities in the region.
