Essentia Health Invests $12 Million in New Emergency Department at Fosston

Introduction

Essentia Health is moving forward with plans for a new emergency department (ED) at its Fosston, Minnesota site, with work scheduled to begin in April 2026. Kraus-Anderson has been selected as the general contractor for the project. The expansion will enhance the patient experience, increase the ED’s size by more than 5,500 square feet, and represent a significant investment in both the hospital campus and the local Fosston community.

Features

The emergency department will grow from 1,100 square feet to 6,700 square feet, providing more space for patients, staff, and visitors. The design prioritises safety, confidentiality, and user-friendly layouts.

Dedicated rooms will be included for patients requiring behavioural health support. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will benefit from improved access, including a new ambulance bay.

In addition to the ED expansion, portions of the hospital campus both interior and exterior will be updated to emphasise healing, comfort, and accessibility for patients.

The project is expected to be completed in early summer 2027.
