Centra Invests $140 Million Modernisation Project with New Hospital Tower

Introduction

Centra has officially started construction on a new state-of-the-art tower at Lynchburg General Hospital, marking the next phase of its extensive Modernisation Plan. This initiative represents the largest investment in facilities, technology, and process improvements in Centra’s nearly 40-year history.

Features

The six-storey, 266,200-square-foot tower will expand healthcare access across the region.
A new emergency department with over 70 treatment spaces, a split-flow care model, integrated psychiatric care, and an imaging/results lounge, designed for future expansion.

A perioperative services floor with 12 modern operating theatres, post-surgery recovery rooms, and advanced support spaces.

A new labour and delivery unit, mother/baby unit, and intensive care nursery tailored to modern family needs.

Enhanced environmental sustainability through geothermal technology, LED lighting, a green roof, and advanced energy systems.

The new tower will provide 40% more space while increasing energy consumption by only 10%, reducing overall hospital energy use by around 40%.

Construction is scheduled for completion in the autumn of 2028.
