Brownsville Advances Healthcare Capacity with $17.3M Hospital Expansion

Introduction

The City of Brownsville and DHR Health Brownsville have approved a new Chapter 380 Grant Agreement to expand the city’s newest hospital. The project will increase hospital space, improve emergency and specialist medical services, and create new employment opportunities. The expansion reflects ongoing collaboration between the City and local partners to support economic growth and improve access to healthcare for residents.

Features

The hospital expansion will add approximately 14,000 square feet of space, including 9,200 square feet of new construction and 4,800 square feet of renovated clinical areas.

The project will introduce six new Emergency Room bays, a larger ER waiting area, and six new surgical suites. It will also allow for the opening of two cardiac catheterisation laboratories, the installation of a Siemens 1.5T MRI machine and a Dual Source CT scanner, and the expansion of radiology services on the south side of the hospital.

Site improvements will include an expanded ER entrance, a full driveway loop to improve traffic flow and emergency access, and more than 34,000 square feet of new landscaped areas.

In addition, the expansion will create 20 new full-time healthcare jobs, increasing the hospital’s capacity to serve patients more efficiently.

The expansion will strengthen local healthcare services by improving access to emergency care, specialist treatment, and advanced diagnostic services.

The project is scheduled for completion within two years of construction commencement.
