Introduction
Ballad Health has begun construction of a new hospital in Unicoi County, Tennessee, nearly two years after Hurricane Helene destroyed the community’s former hospital in severe flooding. The US$44 million replacement facility is being built on a 15-acre site in the Town of Unicoi and is designed to restore local access to inpatient and emergency care.
Features
The new hospital will include 10 inpatient beds and a 10-bed emergency department, along with diagnostic imaging services such as X-ray, MRI, CT and mammography.
An attached Medical Office Building will provide space for local physicians and outpatient clinics, allowing patients to access more healthcare services within the community.
The facility will also incorporate modern technology, updated design and enhanced emergency preparedness measures.
It will be constructed at the same elevation as Interstate 26 and around five feet above the 500-year floodplain.
This design is intended to improve the hospital’s resilience and help maintain safe operations during future emergencies.
The project has been planned with input from Ballad Health leadership, clinical and engineering teams, construction specialists, emergency preparedness experts and the Unicoi County Hospital Community Advisory Board.
