Ballad Health Announces $160 Million Expansion of Franklin Woods Community Hospital

Introduction:

The expansion of Franklin Woods Community Hospital is a key component of a broader $160 million capital investment by Ballad Health.

Features:

This project aims to address the growing demand for healthcare services by adding 20 new inpatient beds, which will enhance the hospital's capacity and reduce patient wait times in the emergency department.

The new facilities will include additional patient beds and upgraded infrastructure to improve patient care and operational efficiency. Architects and project planners are working closely with hospital staff to ensure that the expansion aligns with clinical needs. 

The expansion is part of a larger $160 million capital investment initiative by Ballad Health, which includes:

  • Launching new pediatric emergency departments in Bristol and Kingsport.
  • Expanding, emergency services in Greeneville TN, and Wise County, VA.
  • Building a new rehabilitation center in Norton, VA.
  • Installing da Vinci surgical systems throughout the service area.
  • Introducing Ion robots for advanced cancer diagnostics in Abingdon, VA, and Johnson City, TN.
  • Adding ECMO services at Johnson City Medical Center.
  • Upgrading diagnostic capabilities at Holston Valley Medical Center.
  • Creating the Barbara Humphrey’s Family Birth Center at Indian Path Community Hospital.
  • Expanding Niswonger Children’s Hospital, including a new NICU and the J.D. Nicewonder Family Perinatal and Pediatric Institute.

Construction is set to begin immediately, with the expansion expected to open in 2026. 

The commitment to investing in both infrastructure and staff, including increased wages and childcare support, to better serve the community and improve overall healthcare delivery.
