Introduction:
Albany Medical Center has announced a $25 million plan to expand and modernise its adult emergency department, marking its first significant upgrade in more than 20 years. The expansion, pending state approval, aims to address increasing demand and improve patient care across the region.
Features:
The project will add approximately 7,000 square feet to the department, representing a 20–25 per cent increase in overall size. This expansion will result in a 50 per cent increase in space dedicated to direct patient care.
The centre currently manages nearly 85,000 patient visits annually, a substantial rise from the 57,000 seen during the last expansion period.
The development includes more than 20 new patient care rooms and a dedicated treatment zone for the most critical and complex cases.
A redesigned triage area will improve the speed and accuracy of patient assessments, leading to faster and safer care delivery.
The number of trauma bays will increase from two to five, enhancing the department’s ability to handle multiple trauma cases simultaneously.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
