This new facility brings together a team of esteemed breast cancer specialists, surgeons, and researchers, offering a wide range of comprehensive services all under one roof.
These services include screening studies, advanced imaging, minimally invasive surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, a high-risk breast cancer prevention program, lymphedema prevention, and genetic counseling. Additionally, patients have access to medical and radiation oncology, nutritional services, and MECCC's Bronx Oncology Living Daily (BOLD) wellness and support program.
The core mission of this breast center is to deliver an unprecedented level of assessment and care. In contrast to the national average, where it often takes over a month to schedule necessary procedures following an abnormal breast exam, followed by an additional 60-day wait before cancer treatment initiation, MECCC's innovative approach aims to expedite patient care.
When a patient presents with a breast lump or receives abnormal mammogram or ultrasound results, the center's surgeons and radiologists swiftly engage in real-time consultations with patients to chart the most appropriate course of action. The breast center is equipped with the latest technology from GE HealthCare, including 3D tomosynthesis mammography. This advanced system incorporates features such as contrast-enhanced mammography, which employs low-dose X-rays and iodinated contrast dye to highlight areas of unusual blood flow. This enhanced capability assists clinicians in identifying lesions that might otherwise remain undetected.
