Wellstar Health System and Augusta University Health System reach agreement for statewide health care partnership

Saturday, April 01, 2023

Wellstar Health System and Augusta University Health System (AUHS) have announced a groundbreaking partnership aimed at expanding health sciences training and research in Georgia. This collaboration will strengthen the affiliation between Wellstar Health System and Augusta University's Medical College of Georgia (MCG) and have a transformative impact on patient care and well-being.

Under the name Wellstar MCG Health, this partnership will enhance medical training, research, and clinical care throughout the state. By bringing together community-based health systems and academic medical centers, like MCG and its affiliated hospitals, the partnership aims to improve access to high-quality healthcare, particularly in rural areas.

The partnership will focus on several key areas to create a healthier future for Georgia. This includes providing advanced clinical care, innovative teaching models, and life-saving research across the state. Efforts will also be made to expand the pipeline of clinicians by investing in the training of physicians at the Medical College of Georgia. Additionally, the partnership will drive care innovation, expand pediatric care services, and make significant investments in digital health technologies.

The collaboration between Wellstar and AUHS will be instrumental in improving healthcare delivery and patient experiences. It will combine the strengths and expertise of both organizations to ensure that patients receive the care they need, regardless of their location.

To support this partnership, Wellstar has committed to investing nearly $800 million over a decade in AUHS facilities and infrastructure. This includes substantial investments in Augusta University Medical Center, the construction of a new hospital, medical office building, and ambulatory surgery center in Columbia County, and the implementation of a state-funded electronic medical records system throughout AUHS. These investments will lead to expanded community programs, economic growth, and job creation across the region.

The agreement has received approval from the boards of Wellstar and AUHS, as well as the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. Pending regulatory approvals, the partnership is expected to be finalized in late summer.

This collaboration marks an important milestone in advancing healthcare in Georgia, strengthening medical education and research, and improving access to quality care for all Georgians.
