Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies (Terumo BCT) has recently obtained FDA clearance for its Reveos Automated Whole Blood Processing System. This groundbreaking device is the first of its kind in the U.S. and facilitates the processing of whole blood into platelets and other components in a single centrifugation cycle, offering an innovative solution to improve the blood and platelet supply for patients.
The traditional method of obtaining platelets involves apheresis, where a donor's blood is drawn, specific components are isolated, and the rest of the blood is returned to the donor. However, the current projections suggest that apheresis donations might not be sufficient to meet the increasing demand for platelets. Terumo BCT's Reveos system addresses this issue by providing blood centers with the capacity to efficiently collect platelets from existing whole blood donations, maximizing the use of resources while increasing platelet availability.
The Reveos system streamlines the manual steps involved in whole blood processing, simplifying the separation of whole blood units into platelets, plasma, and red blood cells. By reducing over half of the steps and optimizing the process, the system aims to enhance blood center management, reduce costs, and improve overall efficiency. This approach allows more blood products to be obtained from the same number of donors.
Having been used in 52 countries for over a decade, Reveos has a proven track record in facilitating blood processing operations. Its implementation in the U.S. is expected to address the growing demand for platelets, essential for treating patients with various conditions like trauma, cancer, and chronic illnesses.
The operation of the Reveos system involves loading up to four units of whole blood into the device, where the centrifugation process separates the blood components. Subsequently, plasma, platelets, red blood cells, and residual leukocytes are collected into their respective product bags and sealed. The entire procedure is recorded to ensure precise data management.
The Reveos Automated Whole Blood Processing System represents a significant advancement in blood processing technology, providing valuable benefits for blood centers and patients alike.
