Smith+Nephew, the renowned global medical technology company, is pleased to announce that its PICO Single Use Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Systems have been awarded an Innovative Technology contract by Vizient, Inc., the largest member-driven health care performance improvement company in the United States. This contract highlights the unique qualities of the PICO Single Use Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Systems recognized by hospital experts serving on Vizient's member-led councils, indicating their potential to bring improvements to the healthcare industry.
Innovative Technology contracts are recommended as a result of a thorough review and evaluation of products submitted through Vizient's Innovative Technology Program. Vizient's member-led councils identify technologies that have the potential to enhance clinical care, patient safety, healthcare worker safety, or improve the business operations of healthcare organizations.
The PICO sNPWT System offers a portable, canister-free design that is easy to use and incorporates Smith+Nephew's soft port technology for enhanced comfort and mobility. This proprietary four-layer technology, based on silicone, effectively manages wound fluid by simultaneously evaporating and locking it away, preventing excess moisture from affecting the wound and periwound area. Additionally, the technology provides compression to the periwound area, extending the benefits of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) beyond the wound site and potentially improving perfusion.
The PICO System's recognition stems from its clearance by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the first sNPWT system indicated to aid in reducing the incidence of superficial and deep incisional surgical site infections (SSIs) for high-risk patients in Class I and Class II wounds, post-operative seroma, and dehiscence.
Laura Ackerman, Vice President and General Manager, NPWT at Smith+Nephew, expressed delight at the recognition, stating, "We are thrilled that our PICO System has been recognized by healthcare experts in receiving this distinguished Innovative Technology contract in the US. Surgical site complications continue to be costly events that plague our patients and healthcare systems. Our PICO technology has been shown to reduce the risk of SSIs across multiple specialties, improving patient care and helping get them home sooner. This recognition of the PICO System by Vizient further validates our commitment to innovating the standard of care for patients."
