SAIL Fusion, a medical technology company committed to advancing the treatment of sacroiliac joint dysfunction using principles inspired by the AO foundation, has proudly unveiled a significant development. The company has recently completed its first-ever implantations of the innovative BowTie SI Fusion System. These milestone surgeries took place on October 14th, led by Dr. Peter Whang, an Associate Professor of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at the Yale University School of Medicine, and Dr. Abdufarrukh Karimov, Head of the Division of Neurosurgery Spine and Chairman of the Neurological Surgery Program at the Republican Medical Center of Neurology and Stroke. This achievement was part of a pilot study conducted at Akfa Medline in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The BowTie SI Fusion System represents a significant advancement in the field, being the first SI fusion system to incorporate the well-established joint fusion principles championed by the AO foundation. This novel technology and surgical approach aim to minimize disruption to surrounding tissues, meticulously prepare the joint, and provide a secure fixation, ultimately enabling a genuinely stable and durable arthrodesis.
Notably, the device features a unique bowtie configuration, integrating iliac and sacral transfixing screws for maximum rigidity. Additionally, it incorporates proprietary porous structures and roughened surface technology, enhancing osteointegration. It is indeed a remarkable step forward that, until now, no one has ventured into the logical path of applying AO principles to the fusion of the SI joint, making this achievement by SAIL Fusion all the more groundbreaking.
